The Dongpo Academy located in the Zhonghe Town of Danzhou was named as the national 3A level scenic spot in July 2011. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit, known as the Southland Attraction enjoying reputation at home and abroad. At 4th year of Shaosheng in Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1097), Su Dongpo was demoted from Huizhou to Danzhou, lasting more than three years, when he lived and lectured, and made friends through literary works, and spread the culture of the Central Plains. The Academy faces south, with gate having imposing, grand and quaint appearance. The gate was written horizontally the 4 Chinese characters “东坡书院” ("Dongpo Academy") at the top, the inscription made by the successful candidate in the imperial examinations at the provincial level named Zhang Ji in Qing Dynasty. Its main attractions include the Qin Shuai Quan (“Fountain in Memory of the Minister of War of Su Dongpo”) and Zai Jiu Ting (“Scholarly & Inquisitive Pavilion”).
Not far from the Dongpo Academy is the Guang Lang An (“Sugar Palm Hut”) and the Dongpo Well. The Guang Lang An was the former residence where Su Dongpo had lived with his son for three years during exile to Danzhou. In order to solve the difficulty of drinking water, Su Dongpo helped the folks to dig a well, and the well water has been exuberant and sweet since then. To commemorate him, the folks named this well as "Dongpo Well". For centuries, the sweet well water has never been dry.
